Saeed Ali is Chief of Staff to City Councilmember Richard Alarcon. He previously served as Chief of Staff for Mr. Alarcon when he served in the California State Senate. Prior to that, Mr. Ali served as the Principal Assistant to Assembly Majority Floor Leader Marco Antonio Firebaugh. Until December 2002, he served as Chief of Staff for Senate Majority Leader, Senator Richard G. Polanco (D-Los Angeles), and the Principal Consultant to the 24-member Latino Legislative Caucus. Mr. Ali is a former college professor and administrator. He has served in his current positions since 1994, when he resigned his academic position and came to Sacramento in response to the anti-immigrant actions of then-Governor Pete Wilson and the Republican Party.
During his tenure, the Latino Caucus grew from 7 members in 1994 to 24 members in 2002. The Caucus saw the election of three Latinos to the Assembly Speaker position, the election of former Speaker Cruz Bustamante as Lieutenant Governor, and the election of numerous Latinos to leadership roles in the Legislature.
Ali is a naturalized citizen who was born in Aligarh, India. A former professor, he came to the United States in 1972 as a Fulbright Fellow. Ali is married to Mary Bonnie Bray and they have three adult sons. The Bray-Alis live in Los Angeles.
