Secretary of State Debra Bowen was on hand to deliver special remarks.  Secretary Rosario Marin was also present to give remarks and to announce the appointment of Ms. Carrie Lopez, HOPE Board Member, as Director of the State Department of Consumer Affairs.  (link to  http://gov.ca.gov/index.php?/press-release/5917/ ).

On Wednesday, April 18th, building on the momentum of the conference, a select group of HOPE Leadership Institute participants and Youth Leadership Through Literacy participants canvassed the state capitol calling for support of AB 178 (Coto).  AB 178 is a pilot program designed to provide monetary support to high schools serving students with the most need to provide greater access to a college preparatory curriculum.  Their efforts directly led to the passage of AB 178 out of the Assembly Education Committee.
